Already, the leading source for model codes and standards, the International Code Council (ICC) is updating EV charging infrastructure guidelines. These will impact the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC), which means that U.S. states and municipalities are likely to follow.
Some areas have moved ahead with EV-ready requirements. So what will the new guidelines require? That depends on the energy codes implemented regionally. Typically, electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) for new construction will require energy systems to be EV capable, ready or EVSE installed.
As electric vehicle adoption surges, making it easy to charge at home is essential. And there is an opportunity to differentiate by ensuring homes are ready for today and what’s ahead.
