Opened in January 2012 with a team of 16 people, the EEIC has built a global reputation for solving the world’s toughest power management challenges. As part of Eaton’s worldwide Corporate Research and Technology group, this state-of-the-art center plays a vital role in the company’s multi-billion-dollar R&D efforts. To develop more efficient, safe, and sustainable solutions, the EEIC now unites over 150 specialists from 20 countries with expertise spanning automotive, residential, hydraulic, electro, and IT power innovation. The center is also continuing to grow rapidly, with Eaton expecting it to almost double in size to 275 people by 2025.
As well as regularly contributing to major European Union and Czech government innovation projects, the EEIC has built partnerships with a host of high-profile academic institutions over the past decade, including the Czech Technical University, the University of West Bohemia Pilsen, Brno University of Technology, the University of Chemistry in Prague and the Technical University of Ostrava. During the same period, its team members have filed more than 60 patents, with 14 being granted—building a formidable track record of success in areas like Industry 4.0, SF6-free switchgear, next-generation circuit breakers, direct current microgrids, advanced valvetrain systems, engine brakes, and vehicle electrification.
Anne Lillywhite, vice president, Engineering, Electrical Sector, EMEA, and Eaton European Innovation Center, Eaton, commented: “I’m incredibly proud of our Eaton European Innovation Center team’s outstanding innovation efforts and I’m pleased that those attending today’s celebration will be able to have firsthand experience of some of our most exciting projects from the last decade. The center has grown into a crucial hub of expertise not just for us at Eaton, but also for governments, commercial partners, and academic institutions across Europe. The Eaton European Innovation Center will continue to go from strength-to-strength, as we expand our diverse team and capabilities to support some of today’s most dynamic cross-industry trends with smart, forward-thinking solutions.”
Eaton continues to invest heavily in the advanced systems needed to ensure the EEIC can keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in power management. This includes installing a best-in-class dynamometer for testing vehicle differentials and drive train components in 2018, as well as establishing a state-of-the-art High Performance Computing cluster in 2020 that supports the development of crucial electrical components like arc-resistant switchgear. To accelerate innovation across its business, Eaton has also established various Centers of Excellence at the EEIC, including for Power Electronics; Software, Electronics & Controls; and Arc Modelling and Simulation.
Tim Darkes, president, Corporate and Electrical Sector, EMEA, Eaton, added: “Looking ahead, the Eaton European Innovation Center’s efforts will continue to be critical as we adapt our portfolio to support the energy transition that’s so important for a more sustainable planet. We’re already stepping up to this challenge by establishing a dedicated Energy Transition and Digitalization unit to help building owners enable a low-carbon future. The potential for flexible, intelligent power is limitless and—thanks to innovation centers like the Eaton European Innovation Center—we can help the world seize these new opportunities.”
