Bonn, GERMANY, November 25, 2021 … Intelligent power management company Eaton is celebrating the opening of its new Eaton Research Labs co-location situated on the Flexible Electrical Networks (FEN) Research Campus at the prestigious RWTH Aachen University.
With Eaton Research Labs’ presence in Europe previously in Prague, Czech Republic, the opening of this co-location is an important milestone—enabling closer collaboration with world-class experts from both academia and industry. Business units from across Eaton will be able to accelerate their R&D efforts with greater access to outstanding researchers, technical facilities, and industry partners, as well as crucial government collaboration opportunities. Launching the co-location with a capacity for 5 dedicated engineers as well as the border engineering teams from across EMEA, Eaton plans to grow its presence in the future.
Drawn from 28 organizations and institutes, the FEN consortium is driving transdisciplinary collaboration to develop more flexible power grids as the nature of the energy mix fundamentally changes. As an industrial partner since 2018, Eaton’s growing presence on the FEN Research Campus will support R&D efforts in many relevant areas of the energy transition. This includes the development of DC power systems for residential and commercial buildings, as well as energy management systems for industrial facilities, and smart EV charging solutions integrated with Eaton’s Buildings as a Grid approach.
“I’m delighted we have a new, permanent presence alongside other leading players developing tomorrow’s power grids,” comments Stefan Costea, technology manager, Eaton European Innovation Center. “Any of our engineers will be able to work from Aachen if needed, accelerating our innovation efforts with on-the-ground access to world-class facilities and academic expertise. That means we can supercharge our efforts to help utilities, businesses and homeowners unlock clean, reliable, efficient and affordable power. This new location will also strengthen our talent pipeline—increasing awareness of Eaton as a leading employer and enabling post-graduate students at RWTH Aachen University to gain valuable industry experience supporting our varied innovation programs.”
“I’m pleased to see the opening of this co-location, which will be so vital to our future R&D efforts,” adds Jörgen von Bodenhausen, senior manager, Government Programs, Eaton. “Leveraging local ecosystems of expertise, including academic institutions, is an important force multiplier on our own innovation investments. Our new co-location puts us in the ideal place to spot opportunities more quickly. Since many potential industry partners have a presence on the RWTH Aachen campus, this co-location also opens the door to further exciting commercial collaborations on power systems, energy transition, power electronics, electromobility and many more.”
Eaton is marking the launch of its new FEN Research Campus location at an event with RWTH Aachen Professors Rik De Doncker and Antonello Monti, as well as Dr. Peter Lürkens and other leading members of the FEN consortium.
