The greening of electricity generation and the intelligent coupling of more energy intensive sectors to the grid will play a central role in getting the world to net zero. We see a growing acceptance in Europe that, as energy production becomes ever more decentralized and digitalized, energy consumers will play an important role actively supporting the overall balance of the system. This means helping to address the challenges of renewables variability by offering more demand-side flexibility -- the new cornerstone of the grid.

Given the accelerating adoption of EVs in Europe as costs decline, the need to anticipate and prepare for this reality is becoming more and more urgent. As most EV charging will take place using privately owned cables, it is vital regulation and open markets are set up in a way that owners of those assets are fairly remunerated for the numerous potential grid services they can provide in high renewable markets. We developed our Buildings as a Grid approach to deliver energy transition by uniting the power needs of buildings and EVs, with on-site renewable energy generation.
Watch Siobahn Meikle’s remarks on how energy management solutions are critical to integrating EVs while maintaining critical loads, vehicle availability and building energy costs.
Speaker: Uday Yadav, President and Chief Operating Officer, Electrical Sector, Eaton
The energy transition is a massive transformation, and it’s gaining momentum. The electricity industry’s role will expand to power the future and increasing electrification—for our homes, communities and businesses. And there’s a profound opportunity to do more—for people and our planet.
