Petroleum firm harnesses the power of predictability with PredictPulse

This story features a U.S.-based petroleum company that transports, stores and distributes crude oil, refined products and other hydrocarbon-based products throughout the U.S. Read why the organization went with Eaton PredictPulse to not only avert potential disasters but also help save money by optimizing maintenance and recommending future service needs. The results from this real-world example demonstrate the impact PredictPulse can have on organizations like yours.

Summary ↓

Challenge
As part of a company-wide focus on preventive and predictive maintenance, a company wanted to deploy a solution that could decrease the chance of downtime within its facilities.

Thanks to PredictPulse remote monitoring service, the firm has already averted potential disaster twice by receiving notification of impending issues with its power equipment. In addition, the next-generation monitoring solution helps the company save money by optimizing maintenance and recommending future service needs.

Challenge: Keeping operations up and running at all times

To mitigate downtime, since 2018, a trio of Eaton  93PM UPSs UPSs has been safeguarding the control panels of the petroleum firm’s rotating equipment across several facilities, including various compressors and motors. In 2021, when the organization sought to incorporate a solution that could enhance its predictive maintenance strategy and further optimize continuous uptime, it chose Eaton PredictPulse remote monitoring service. Part of the Brightlayer Data Centers suite, the remote monitoring application uses cloud-based analytics to monitor and predict power component failure 24/7.

“At our facility, we are very focused on predictive maintenance because we know that it can really decrease downtime. We try to implement anything we can to improve our maintenance program as long as it is cost-effective, which we found PredictPulse to be.”

Solution: Averting disaster before it strikes

Providing 24x7 expert remote monitoring of the company’s power quality equipment, PredictPulse puts an array of valuable information into the hands of technicians. In addition to providing critical alarm phone notification, mobile and browser dashboard access, trended and event data, and monthly summary reporting, the service is integrated with Eaton’s field service technicians and technical analysts for remote diagnostics. That means Eaton representatives are carefully monitoring equipment status and conditions at all times ── and if needed, will dispatch a field technician to the company’s site to expedite troubleshooting and repairs, sometimes before the customer even realizes there is a problem. Such was the case when PredictPulse assessed an intermittent inverter fault in one of the firm’s UPSs.

“We were alerted by Eaton via email, direct messaging and a phone call. An Eaton field technician was simultaneously notified and was dispatched to troubleshoot the issue.”

In a second instance, PredictPulse alerted the company to an impending power module failure. Once again, an Eaton field technician was immediately notified and dispatched to troubleshoot the issue, with the UPM successfully replaced and the problem resolved.

Throughout the issues, the petroleum company’s technician was kept in the loop at all times through PredictPulse notifications; in fact, he reveals that one of the features he values most is “being able to access it anywhere, anytime from either my phone or laptop.”

The organization is also gaining value through PredictPulse Insight, the first cloud-based analytics service for data center infrastructure to predict the failure of power components. The new service adds predictive analytics to the remote monitoring service ── shifting power monitoring from a reactive to a proactive model. By collecting and analyzing data from connected power infrastructure devices, Insight provides information that Eaton needs to make recommendations and take action on the company’s behalf.

“Without PredictPulse, troubleshooting and facility downtime would have been significantly greater, decreasing production and increasing man hours.”

For instance, all capacitors degrade over time, yet when one is approaching failure, there may be no visible effects. However, other capacitors will have to take over the workload, which can shorten their remaining lifespan. Furthermore, in many cases, a capacitor failure will trigger the UPS to switch to bypass mode, during which it is unable to protect downstream loads. The predictive analytics from PredictPulse Insight help the petroleum organization ensure proper equipment operation at all times. In addition to making it significantly easier to manage data center reliability, PredictPulse helps companies save money by recommending future service needs.

“The predictive part of the analytics will give us data that can tell us when a battery needs to be changed out.”

Going forward, the technician says he is also planning to use PredictPulse to print intuitive reports, which provide easy, at-a-glance summaries of every event, including what happened, where and when.

Results: With PredictPulse in place, the petroleum company is now able to...

• Mitigate downtime risks associated with battery, capacitor, fan and air filter failures
• Proactively replace components before failure
• Make future recommendations and extend asset life using data
• Leverage Eaton’s power expertise to monitor and notify the company of critical alarms 24x7 and manage emergencies

Questions to ask determining if PredictPulse is a fit for your organization

1. Do you find your organization reacting to problems? Does your organization know that the majority of downtime-related issues can be proactively addressed or prevented?

2. What do you think your organization’s costs would be if your operation lost power for an hour or more? What might this outage mean to you personally? What’s the value of preventing possible outages using UPS data and monitoring?

3. What’s the likelihood or risk of a battery, capacitor or fan failing on your current UPS? Would preventive maintenance eliminate the risk of a UPS outage?
